Experience Kefalonia’s finest wine roads by E-bike

At Alpha Cycling Holidays, we believe that quality, care, fun, and providing a unique tour experience are important in everything we do. The Wine Bike Tour is one of our more popular tours for a good reason; it shows both our values and a unique perspective of Kefalonia that can only be seen by bike. We have executed this tour with great care and joy for four years now. The Wine Bike Tour starts from our office in Argostoli and then takes us by ferry to Lixouri. We bring the E-bikes on the ferry.

Then we ride one of the two scenic wine roads across the Paliki peninsula to Sclavos Winery — far more convenient than going by car, especially after the wine tasting.  On this coastal route, we ride through the quiet mountain hills and valleys. This winery expresses itself through being a biological and biodynamic producer. Biodynamic wine is produced by working with the sun and moon, as the sun’s seasonal position shapes vine growth and ripening. Meanwhile, the moon’s cycles influence sap flow, soil activity, and the ideal timing for vineyard and cellar work. The biodynamic calendar is used to decide the optimal days for pruning and harvesting.

Sclavos Winery works entirely according to these biological and biodynamic principles, meaning that the vineyards and the winery are treated as one ecosystem. Moreso, chemical fertilisers and phytosanitary products are not used at all, and the vines are left to develop naturally, supported by soil health rather than synthetic treatments. This approach continues once the grapes reach the cellar. Every fermentation at Sclavos Winery happens spontaneously, using wild yeasts rather than cultivated ones. The wines are bottled unfiltered, with only minimal sulphites added when truly necessary.

What is the result, you might ask? Pure wines cultivated from eight different areas in Kefalonia. Two of these famous wines originating from Kefalonia are Robola and Mavrodaphne. Robola is a white grape variety that thrives on the slopes of Mount Ainos. The grapes. At a closer proximity to Sclavos Winery is the blue grape variety Mavrodaphne. The Sclavos family will gladly share their stories with you during our Wine Bike Tour.

Our four-hour-long Wine Bike Tour starts daily, except on Sunday, at 03:00 PM. We will provide a Dutch- or English-speaking tour guide. At Sclavos Winery, there will be a sommelier who will lead the five-flight wine tasting.
